What is the difference between unglazed and glazed porcelain tile?

A lighter glaze, fired at higher temperatures, results in increased density. Moreover, the additional layer of glass on glazed tiles makes them highly resistant to moisture, with a porosity of less than 0.5%.

On the other hand, unglazed porcelain tiles offer remarkable durability due to their higher density. These tiles are an excellent choice for commercial applications with high or heavy foot traffic. While unglazed porcelain tiles may be more expensive, their long-lasting nature justifies the investment.

​Glazed porcelain tiles cannot be sealed effectively due to their low porosity and moisture resistance. Most sealants wear off over time or fail to adhere properly. However, a select few high-quality sealants can be used on unglazed porcelain tiles, although sealing is not necessary as they already possess properties similar to glazed porcelain.
