Tile Sustainability

Eco Friendly Tiles

From unparalleled durability to zero-waste manufacturing, tile is the most eco-friendly flooring option available.

If you want a natural, sustainable flooring choice then a porcelain or ceramic tile is the perfect option for you.

Energy Efficient

Tile’s inherent thermal mass reduces peak heating and cooling, which helps moderate temperature swings in your home. This means less work for your HVAC system and more energy savings for you.

Ever wonder why your coffee mug keeps your coffee warm for longer. This is because it is probably made of ceramic. Ceramics are fully dense, the alumino-silicates in tiles allow tiles to act as natural insulators for homes.

Modern testing has established that ceramic and porcelain tile installation results in lower cooling and heating requirements when compared with other commonly used flooring options.

Certified Green

Ceramic tiles are composed of naturally occurring raw materials which include clay, quartz and feldsphatic materials. Their use does not create or pose problems for the ecosystem, and the landscape can be restored after quarrying activities cease.

Demanding European Standards ensure that most tile manufacturers effectively reduce the impact of their production processes. They endeavour to reuse waste water and recycle waste materials produced during the production processes. Manufacturers are now using high efficiency kilns and single-fired production processes to reduce energy usage.

Natural Materials

The materials used to make tile are generally found within 500 miles of manufacturing facilities, dramatically reducing the energy and emissions that come from long-distance shipping.

Minimal Waste & Longevity

Ceramic tiles require minimal maintenance during their life cycle and will last for a long time. Various international studies confirm that ceramic tile lasts longer than competitive floor and wall finishes. The reasons why can be summed up as follows:
  • Properly selected and installed ceramic tiles have an average life expectancy of 50 years.

  • A building which has a façade of ceramic tiles can be up to 30% more energy efficient.

  • Tile is totally inert, so unlike other wall and floor finishes, it does not release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCS).

  • Tile is resistant to extreme weather conditions (including flooding), chemical attack, moisture, ultraviolet radiation and

  • temperature variations. It is also fire-resistant and does not create additional combustion material (in fact, it may help reduce the spread of fire) nor does it contribute to the toxic fumes and smoke when fire occurs.

  • Tiles have low maintenance costs over a prolonged period. Cleaning can be carried out with light mopping and sweeping with warm water and neutral detergents.

  • Heating and cooling costs are reduced because the clay body of the tiles act as a temperature storage which gradually releases thermal energy back into the room.

  • Ultimately, because they are made from natural raw materials, tiles can be easily disposed of when their useful functionality ceases, thereby minimising the use of natural resources in the production of waste.
