Tile Sealer
Sealers are used to protect unglazed tiles and grouts from absorbing stains. If left untreated the porous surface of the tile will absorb grease, dirt and colour from all organic or chemical materials. Sealers can protect the tile often without altering it’s appearance. Sealers form a non-porous film over the surface of the tile preventing liquid, grease or dirt to penetrate.
Important points to understand:
There are two types of sealers:
All unglazed tiles, even the very dense ones like porcelains, should be sealed prior to grouting. This is particularly important when a dark coloured grout is being used with a light coloured tile. Naturally, this is to prevent the grout from staining the tile.
Only penetrating sealers should be used on dense, unglazed tiles such as quarry tiles or porcelain tiles. Surface sealers are unnecessary and will require frequent maintenance.
Because there are so many brands of sealers on the market, it is important that you follow your distributor’s recommendations as well as read the instructions on the bottle.
Important points to understand:
There are two types of sealers:
- Penetrating Sealers – These sealers are absorbed into the tile or grout, forming a stain resistant shield just below the surface. Most penetrating sealers will not darken or change the appearance of the tile in any way.
- Surface Sealers – These sealers are coated on top of the tile and grout forming a non-porous, stain resistant barrier. The surface sealer will bring out the rich natural colours of the tile as well as add a slight sheen.
