Popular kitchen and bathroom remodeling trends

For homeowners looking to shake things up in the bathroom or kitchen, there are plenty of twists on classic designs to choose from.

Erich Van Cleave, owner of Van Cleave Construction, Remodeling and Design, shared some of the recent trends homeowners are incorporating into these two spaces.

Barn doors
“Something real popular which we’re seeing is the barn doors,” Van Cleave says. “Homeowners are wanting to incorporate a barn door into the home, whether it be on a master bath, a closet or a bonus room.”

Bathtub and shower options
“Some of the newer houses are built with what they call deck tubs or corner tubs built in,” Van Cleave says. “The freestanding tubs are a throwback to the old claw-foot tubs. They seem to be more comfortable, more elegant.”

He says there are other options for those wanting something more appealing regarding the shower. The zero-entry shower is a shower minus the curb in front, making it easily accessible.

“Lots of times you don’t even have a shower door or curtain on it because of the way it’s designed,” Van Cleave says. “It also opens up opportunities to install heated tile floors.”

He says towel warmers have made their way into the new year, adding a more luxurious feel to your bathroom space.

Classic white
Van Cleave says he’s seeing lots of white cabinetry in both the kitchen and bathroom.

“White is such as easy color to make look good. Matching accessories gives you a lot of options giving you a nice canvas to work with,” he says.

Experts say that white subway tile will never go out of style. Make it the base for a casual ,industrial style or dress it up with traditional-style furniture and fixtures for a timeless look.

Take your decor a step further by going with a black-and-white theme. Black and white remains strong color pattern and is being used with some shades of gray. Old meets new in a fun way when classic patterns are mixed with retro 1970s colors.

Worldly inspired designs
Interior design experts suggest Mediterranean-inspired mosaic tile can add a rich look to your space. You don’t need a lot to make a big statement. Try it as an accent in the shower or tub area or as a backsplash in a half bath.

Storage space
When looking to update your kitchen or bathroom space, keep in mind that practical storage will never go out of style. Whenever possible, take advantage of vertical space and take your cabinetry up the wall. Experts recommend that if built-in cabinetry isn’t an option, incorporate an interesting or antique piece of furniture. Open shelving is still a popular trend that can also be quite practical in the bathroom.

Marble looks

There are a variety of manmade options that look as good as marble. Quartz is popular and often used for kitchen countertops. Porcelain tiles are another top choice. It looks good and won’t stain, and scratch as easily. Bold geometric styles out right now regarding tiles.

“Marble looks really good but it’s really high maintenance,” Van Cleave says. “It’s a super soft material that can stain easily.”
