This incredible video will certainly make you appreciate your cement or encaustic tiles just that little bit more. The above video demonstrates the fine art and process of making the unique and often hand made and crafted traditional cement or encaustic tiles. Encaustic tiles can provide such a beautiful touch to any space with unique patterns and colours that are aesthetically rustic and a little bit old school. You can really get the perfect blend of traditional Mediterranean mixed with today's modern tiles. How are cement tiles produced? Please watch the video or read the the below process. Encaustic's are made in 3 layers. First Layer: The wear layer or tile face is a mixture of highly resistant portland white cement, powdered white marble and natural colorants. Wear resistance, color and brightness rely on the quality of this layer. Second Layer: This layer is a mortar made of fine sand and standard portland gray cement. The mortar is applied as a base to the tile to reinforce the first layer, providing the ability to withstand high compression loads for the finished product. This process is what makes the tiles suitable for most floor surfaces allowing you the flexibility of placing the tiles in any area of your home. Third Layer: This is a porous mixture of high quality cement with the required thickness for impact strength before and after installation. The tile is then hydraulically pressed under high pressure. A good tile should be highly compact and waterproof like a porcelain tile which is incredibly dense, hard wearing and has a moisture absorption rate of only 0.5%. Once complete, the tile undergoes a thorough curing process. The result is a product this is suitable for application in most floor surfaces with light to semi heavy commercial foot traffic and for any wall spaces.
