Can you tile over existing tiles?

You most definitely can tile over tiles. Tiling over existing tiles is a great way to save time, money and update your space.

One of the most frequently asked questions during bathroom renovations is - Can you tile over existing bathroom floor tiles or wall tiles? - Well, technically you can lay new tiles over existing tiles. However this method of tiling highly depends on the condition of the existing tiles.

Tiling over tiles is a great way to update and modernise the design of any space without the expense and hassle of removing existing tiles.

Tiling over tiles is a much cheaper process that lifting up existing tiles. It removes the need to hire specialist tools, machines or labour to remove existing tiles and adhesive.

However, while tiling over tiles is a great option to update the design of your space, it is not a solution for everyone.

Since you are renovating the floor tiles or wall tiles because they are worn out, damaged or out-dated, tiling over the existing tiles is generally not advisable. There are some conditions that exist that may prevent you from tiling over tiles. These include:

  • If your old tiles are loose, drummy, lifting, uneven or damaged
If your tiles are damaged or drummy, this means that any flooring or wall material placed on top of the existing tiles will have the same issues. Tiling over these inadequate tiles will just be covering the issues for a short period of time.

  • If the added height on top of the existing tiles impedes access or does not fit.
The height of new tiles on top of existing tiles can cause a height issue and possibly block doors or cupboards or result in a large step up from outside or into your wet areas. These issues can however be resolved by trimming doors, skirting and creating falls or ramps into areas that are of concern.

  • The adhesive for the new tiles may not stick as well to the existing tiles as a concrete bedding because of the humidity, movement or condition of the existing floor or wall tiles.
Nerang Tiles has provided some tips and tricks below to help you consider whether you wan to tile over your existing bathroom floor tiles or bathroom wall tiles.

Before you start

Materials Required
Special materials specifically designed for nontraditional surfaces are required when tiling over existing tiles.

If you are tiling over tiles that have a matt finish then the best adhesive to use would be any non slump, flexible tile adhesive that has a C2S2TE classification that can be installed in accordance with Australian Standard AS3958.1-2007.

If you are tiling over tiles that have a gloss finish then the approach is just slightly different. Before installing the tiles you will need to prime the existing surface of the tiles by using a specific tile primer that will need to be applied by a roller to the existing floor. Once the primer has dried then a rubber based modified adhesive can be applied.

Inspection
It is critical that you properly inspect the condition of the existing bathroom floor tiles or bathroom wall tiles because they are the foundation of your new tiling job. Any tiling job needs to be properly sealed and bond with its base. If your existing bathroom tiles are well laid, there are no hollow gaps underneath or humidity issues, then it should be okay to lay the new bathroom tiles.

To inspect and prepare the surface properly, you can check for cavities in the existing tiles by gently tapping on them with a rubber or wooden hammer to search for hollow sounds. These gaps or cavities are usually caused by the lack of adhesive between the existing tiles and the subflooring but can also be caused by movement in the surface.

Preparation
Make sure that the floor tiles and wall tiles are leveled, any spots that are elevated should be grinded down with a right angle grinder fixed with a masonry wheel.

Sand all the tiles with a belt or orbital sander to scratch out any surface glazes. This will create a rougher and more porous surface which will help the adhesive bond to the existing tiles.

Vacuum and clean the tiles with detergent and water to remove any grime, dirt, sealers and wax. Rinse the surface of the old tiles with clear water and let it dry.

Installation
After you have prepared the floor, all that is left is for you to glue your new tiles to the existing tiles in your bathroom floor and wall. Tilers recommend using a rubber based glue for this job. This will provide more flexibility as the ground and existing tiles move slightly throughout the seasons.

Not necessarily. It will depend on the condition of your existing tiles as to whether you can go larger or stay the same/go smaller. Many people opt to use a different size.

Hi
I have chipped tiles in my shower, the builder said that if he takes the tiles off he must re waterproof the shower, is it right? If so do you suggest to retile on top of the old tiles?

Nerang Tiles
6/8/2023 09:10:18 am

Vince

Tiling on top of tiles is recommended when it is possible to do so.

This means that the tiles underneath must be in good condition and free from defects that may cause any additional tiles to crack, move or pop.

Tiling over tiles is generally a more economical method than reapplying waterproofing and removing existing tiles.

We recommend seeking advice from a local installer.

Robert, there are many different solvent based primers that you can use to etch out the surface of the existing tiles that enable and improve the adhesion of a wide range of coatings, waterproofing membranes and tile adhesives over non-absorbent surfaces such as porcelain tiles.

Examples of this are Eco Prep & Prime or Ultra Prime.

I would suggest visiting the staff at Nerang Tiles or your local tile store to inquire about the different products available and which one would best suit your surface and budget requirements.

Can I lay cement sheet on top the floor tiles. If so what glue should I use. Goal is then to lay floor boards on-top of the cement sheet.
I had hoped that laying the cement sheet will provide a new level base, as well as raise the floor up to a deserted height

Reply

11/30/2016 08:07:09 am

Hi Mark, yes you can lay cement sheet on top of any floor tiles. A rubber based or rubber polymodified glue should do the trick.

Like with any flooring, just ensure that your base (tiles) are in good condition to accommodate a flat surface layer being added to it.

You will also need to consider waterproofing, as cement sheeting is porous and liquid can build up between the existing tiles and your new flooring which can damage both the adhesive and the cement sheeting.

Important Tip: If you're planning to raise your floor levels to accommodate new flooring and different floor levels, please ensure that your ceiling heights, skirtings, cupboards and door hinges will comply can accommodate the new heights to avoid both trip hazards and so that all doors can be opened.

When tiling over tiles , how do you get around the taps being deeper recessed. I've seen tap extensions but even the shortest ones are too long.

Hi Erik

This questions is best directed at a plumber, however we would recommend purchasing a longer than required tap extension and if possible use an angle grinder to shave it back or cut it to its required length while using silicone and the recommended adhesive to connect your piping back together.

I have stripped the walls down in the shower but i am considering keeping the shower floor tiles and tiling over them.

I am waterproofing the walls again and considering waterproofing again over the old floor tiles. Would you recommend this ?

Nerang Tiles would always recommend removing existing floor tiles where possible to ensure the best result. However where it is not possible to remove existing floor tiles then you should treat the old floor tiles as you would a new substrate (concrete slab).

Davco Adhesives has some great DIY Youtube videos on how to waterproof and prime for the laying of tiles.

The tiles should be primed and waterproofed just as you would a new slab of concrete. However this will all depend on the quality of your existing floor tiles, if they are drummy or coming off in any way then you should first look at removing them as this will effect any tiles laid on the existing floor tiles.

Hi
Ours is a 1969 house with wood subfloor, the kitchen floor tiles are original. So i am assuming they are the very thin vinyl asbestos tiles.. They look like the shopping centre tiles.. The underlay looks like wood/plywood..Would u recommend using cement sheet on top and then laying tiles or directly laying new tiles? just thinking about future renos and demos, dont want it to be a asbestos hazard.. what is the general trade practice in these situations?

Reply

SK

General practice would be to remove any asbestos sheeting in a safe and secure manner before doing any work on the materials. Applying any materials to the surface could damage or cause asbestos to free itself when removing the existing vinyl tiles resulting in a health hazard.

We are not aware of vinyl containing asbestos however if this is the case we would recommend the above.

Otherwise a a professional tiler should be able to quote on and advise on the best practice and method for laying tiles.

In my area asbestos was commonly used in the adhesive under the lino... which was not common in other places I'd lived where you could easily lift lino to reveal lovely wooden floors. Asbestos was popular here as there was a big fire in the 30s and it was mined locally and cheap. It turned out to not be that difficult to have it removed. It cost $30 a sq metre and was a simple day job, all properly contained, vacuumed, sprayed down and removed by a certified asbestos remover. We went out for the day and came back to it all removed.

Hi, i only renovated my bathroom 4 years ago and am really unhappy with the type of tile that was used on the floor , i want to re-tile over the existing tiles with a smaller tile, normally the wall tile sits over the floor tile, should all the bottom rows of the wall tile come off or can you butt the floor tile against the wall tile?

Aaron - Your tiler should be able to advise you as to whether the tiles are in good condition and you should also have the tiles waterproofed by a licensed professional.

David - Yes you can have your floor tiles join to the existing wall tiles with either a grout or silicone joint.

Hi,
We are interested in tiling over our exisiting bathroom tiles however, besides making sure the door still works is there an other issue with the floor being a little bit higher?
We want to do this is both our ensuite and main bathroom.
Also we are considering painting over the wall tiles in the shower to save money, are there any issues with the waterproofing or peeling of this method?
Thanks

Hi Rebecca

When tiling over existing tiles there are three main considerations in terms of the height of the tiles that you need to be attentive too. These include the height of the doors, the height of your skirtings and the adjoining floor coverings to the other room / hallway.

There are two important components to painting ceramic tile—preparing the surface properly and using the right type of paint. The most important steps are cleaning the tile then sanding it down perhaps with a fine (180-220 grit) synthetic grit sandpaper, such as silicon carbide or aluminum oxide, to take the gloss off the glazed surface. After dusting the bathroom and cleaning any residue form the tiles you can then paint your tiles using a latex or epoxy paint.

Hope this information helps.

In most cases yes it will be fine to tile over your existing floor tiles. However it will depend on the condition of your tiles and substrate. Ask a tiler for their visual opinion on the condition of your tiles and their condition before beginning installation works.

Hi Cleo, you can tile over existing tiles but it will depend on the their condition and height allowance for existing skirting and doorways. If any of your tiles are cracked or drummy then we recommend not tiling over the existing floor tiles. We recommend having a tiler inspect the site to be renovated or builder give you a quote as it seems like you are planning a complete renovation.

There are many different bonding solutions and adhesives available for installing over tiles, speak to your tiler or local tile store for more information. Of course installing tiles will increase the load. Flooring, like all fixtures both structural and non structural will account for the non dynamic weight and permanent force on any structure.

We are looking to put new tile in our bathroom. As you mentioned, it would be alright to place the new tile over the existing tile if there isn't anything wrong with the old tile. For the most part, the existing tile is in good condition, but there is one part that has a chip in it. Would this make it so that we have to take out all of the old tile first?

Looking at tile over tile for a bathroom and shower when replacing vanity/toilet as a cheaper option but 2 tiles are cracked infront of vanity with no hollowing and are level. The terracotta colour under the porcelain can be seen on some tile edges in shower along with one that has starting breaking away ontop. Is it possible to still tile over with a little more prep work?

Nerang Tiles link
6/6/2020 08:27:07 am

Hi Stephanie

If parts of the existing tiles are chipping away or cracking then this will continue when you tile over. This means the new tiles and adhesive will adhere to broken or loose pieces and cause further issues.

You will need to identify the issue as to why they are cracking and chipping or remove those tiles and build up a bedding of sand and cement to level with the floor.

Then you can tile over and tile over the other tiles if they are in good condition.

It is highly recommended to waterproof wet areas.

Tile over tile application is dependant on the quality of the existing tiles as to whether tile over tile installation is possible.

For specific waterproofing requirements you should seek advice from a qualified person or your local building authority for your wet area.

We are not aware of any weight limits for tiles that would be exceeded by any type of flooring.

It is not possible to know the weight of your current tiles without knowing the tile type and make. A a general rule, 10mm porcelain tiles will weight 20-22 kg per sqm excluding joints. This weight will differ depending on the thickness, tile material etc.

Please see advice in the article above

" If your old tiles are loose, drummy, lifting, uneven or damaged
If your tiles are damaged or drummy, this means that any flooring or wall material placed on top of the existing tiles will have the same issues. Tiling over these inadequate tiles will just be covering the issues for a short period of time "

It is likely that your tiles or installation is defective or wall specific or another tile that is inappropriate for flooring applications has been installed.

We do not recommend installing tiles over loose, drummy, cracked, defective or damaged tiles. The issue with the underlining substrate should be found and corrected.

Please seek advice from a professional tiler or your local tile store.

Is it better if I tile, wall and floor, over small tiles (15x15)with larger tiles (30x40) so as to avoid any issues with with some of the smaller tiles sounding hollow? Reason is if a smaller tile becomes unstuck the larger tile will still be glued to the other smaller tiles

We recommend installing any size format using proper installation techniques and back buttering adhesive. This formal techniques places adhesive across the entire surface area of a tile.

If there are hollow or drummy tiles we do not recommend installing tile on tile if there is an underlining issues to the existing tiles.

One thing I am unable to find information on online is that fall in the floor to waste - how is that dealth with when laying tiile over tile? Are the new tiles cut in places and angled to help form the fall? My guess is the old floor waste drain needs to be removed and an new one put in too to adjust for the new floor height difference?
