Why use a Bullnose Tile?

Swimming pool coping tiles often referred to as a bullnosed tiles create the edge of your swimming pool and conceal and protect the structural elements of your swimming pool from water damage.

Swimming pool coping tiles provide a smooth and safe edge for swimmers.

As well as a practical safety feature, swimming pool coping tiles can lift your pool design, adding depth and definition. Swimming pool coping tiles can create a standout feature for your swimming pool surrounds or blend surround tiling to the edge of your swimming pool.

Machined and pre-fabricated bullnosed tiles are recognisable because of their smooth round edges. Swimming pool coping tiles are viewed a the most popular and practical solution to treat the edge and finishes of tiled cornres or edges such as swimming pools, stair cases and outdoor patio areas.

Eliminate the sharp edges of your tiled areas by applying a bullnosed tile to improve safety and the aesthetics of your space.

Machined Tile Nosing

Nerang Tiles provides the opportunity to have almost any tile or natural stone cut and machined to a copping tile.

Below are a number of swimming pool tile copping, tile bullnose and tile edging profiles available to be machined onto almost all porcelain, ceramic and natural stone tiles.

The lead times for the various tile profiles vary from 1-4 weeks depending on the labour processes to cut, machine, dry and glue the different profiles.

For more information and assistance with designing your swimming pool surrounds, stair case or edging of your patio to complete the aesthetics and improve safety, visit the Nerang Tiles showroom and take advantage of the expert design team.

Laminated Flat Edge

Laminated Flat Edge Bullnose tiles are square and bulky finish to the edge of a tile.

The Laminated Flat Edge Bullnose tile is made using an extra piece of the tile which is glued to the underside of the tile edge to give it double the thickness.

The front face of the edge is then machined to a flat finish.

To finish, a small arras is cut along the top and bottom edge ensuring soft, safe edges.

The result is contemporary, unobtrusive and easy on the eye.

This profile is becoming increasingly popular with Queensland and northern N.S.W. pool builders who want to offer the most up to date designs to their clients.

The feature photo is of a natural stone product and this finish can only be achieved with natural stone.

Apron with Round Edge

The Apron with Round Edge is a Half Bullnose with a piece of the tile cut and glued to the underside of the tile edge.

This finish provides a full bodied look with a matching tile band.

The construction of this profile involves bonding a strip of tile (usually of 30 – 90mm height) at right angles onto the floor tile, which is machined with a half bullnose.

Half Bullnose

The most popular edging for pool and stair edges.

This finish can be applied to almost any tile material.

The edge is machined to have a soft and safe finish by polishing the side of a tile to a curved finish. '

The half bullnose edging option ha the fastest turnaround time for any of the machined nosing profiles.

Full Bullnose with Laminated Tile

The Laminated Full Bullnose is a chunkier, more traditional profile for those who prefer a thicker and more prominent look on their tile edging.

This edge is achieved by cutting a strip of the same type of tile and laminating it (by clamping and gluing) to the underside of the edge of the tile.

When the epoxy glue has fully dried, the tile is then put through the bullnosing process and honed or polished as required.

You will need to allow for significantly longer lead times when ordering the Laminated Full Bullnose due to it’s labour intensive nature.

Full Bullnose

This neat, fully rounded edge is designed to both soften the tile edge and also give the option of creating a small overhang to add a simple but effective feature.

By using this profile around your swimming pool, a small, soft lip is created for an unobtrusive edge.

Step Tread Grooves

The set of three 6mm wide grooves can be applied to virtually any selected floor tile.

This process provides a non slip section in the tile itself without the necessity of  using  pre-made step tread pieces which rarely match the rest of your tiles.

After extensive testing on both polished and rockface tiles, our Step Tread Grooves acheived the “V” rating (approx. equal to R12) as per AS/NZS 4586:2004- SLIP RESISTANT MEASUREMENT OF NEW PEDESTRIAN SURFACES.

Flat Edge With Bevel

This type of coping finish softens the edge of the tile while still maintaining a square edge.

Laminted Flat Edge with Bevel

This coping profile provides a chunky square finish to the edge of a tile.

To make the profile, a piece of the tile is glued to the underside of the nosing edge to give it double thickness. The front face of the nosing edge is then machined to a flat finish. Once completed a small arras is cut along the top and bottom of the edges to complete the edging with soft safe edges.

Mitred Apron

This finish for coping provides a laminated flat edge which gives a square aesthetic to the edge of a space.

The edging is manufactured by taking an extra piece of the same tile by adhering it to the underside of the edging side to give it double thickness. The front face of the tile is then machined to a flat finish and a small arras is cut along the top and bottom edges to provide a soft and safe edge.

Round Edge Apron

Our Apron with round edge provides a deep edge to give your coping a full bodied look with a matching tile band.

The construction of this profile involves bonding a strip of tile (usually of 30 – 90mm height) at right angles onto the floor tile, which we machine with our very popular half bullnosed round edge.

When installing this type of apron coping, it’s important to remember that the apron strip also needs to be fully supported with tile adhesive when being installed to achieve maximum strength and durability of the product.
Manufactured coping and edging tiles for pool surrounds, stair ways and outdoor patios provides an easy solution and common sense approach to getting the perfect edging tile customised to the designed and space intended.

Visit the Nerang Tiles Gold Coast Tile Showroom to learn more about coping tiles and the different option available.

What is a Bullnose Tile

Bullnose tiles are used to provide a smooth, rounded edge for countertops, staircase steps, building corners, patios, verandahs, pool surrounds or other construction.

The most common and widely used type of bullnose tile is to complete the surrounds of a pool. Often referred to as pool nosing or swimming pool capping, bulllnose tiles provide an opportunity to improve safety and design aesthetics.

Tile Bullnose Applications

Walls
If you are tiling a wall that has an exposed edge then a bullnose tile will yield a more pleasing and professional finish. Mitred edges are the most popular wall bullnose type used in this scenario, were the edges of the tile are cut on angles so that they join almost perfectly. This hides the edge of the tile and provides a clean and modern aesthetic.

Floors
Bullnose tiles are perfectly suited to flooring applications such as pool surrounds, patios, verandahs and stair cases. The nosing provides a safe curved edge while hiding the edge / side of a tile. This provides improved safety, a better looking finish and the opportunity to avoid using aluminium or plastic trims or angles to cover up the edge of a designed space.

Corners
Bullnose tiles can also be used to smooth out sharp edges on tub surrounds or countertops. The outermost edges of bathroom niches can also be finished with bullnose rather than standard tile.

Stairway Anti Slip Nosing Strips

Nerang Tiles has a range of commercial grade anti slip nosing strips to assist meeting compliance with the Australian Standards.

Some building sites will require compliance with AS 1428.1:2009 Design for access and mobility Part 1: General requirements for access—New building work.

There are a number of design options when it comes to meeting compliance requirements for stairways to improve safety for the visually impaired.

Designers can specify:
  • Aluminium stair nosing strips with contrasting colours;
  • Anti slip step treads with grooves;
  • Manufactured grooved tiles in a contrasting colour; and / or
  • Anti slip tape and other inserts.
