Slips and falls lead to thousands of injuries in Australia annually. It is widely accepted that the type of flooring is a major contributing factor to slip and fall incidents.
The best way to add improved safety and reduce the risk of slip and fall injuries is to choose a flooring solution that has an anti slip surface that is suitable for the application.
The most common class of people that are at risk of slip and fall injuries are the elderly who can have trouble with balance. This makes them more susceptible to the risk of injury by slipping and falling.
Carers and staff in aged care environments, both at aged care facilities and in home care situations, owe a duty of care to the individuals under their care. This means that choosing a safe flooring solution is an important consideration when designing a building in aged care environments. When it comes to choosing products to be part of a hospital facility or an aged care facility, the right products are going to ensure a better, safer and cleaner environment for all who utilise the facility.
Porcelain tiles offer a number of solutions that meet regulatory requirements, improve safety and reduce the risk of slip and fall injuries. Below are a number of product types and ranges that can assist aged care facilities meet their duty of care towards their residents and assist those living at home, improve the safety of their residence.
The Australian Slip Resistence Standards are based on the AS/NZS 4586 and CSIRO HB197. These standards specify specific anti slip surface conditions that must be met for specific areas in aged care and hospital type facilities. For any dry areas in an aged care facility, the building must install flooring that meets an R9 anti slip resistance. This means that all foyers, hallways and rooms must have an R9 anti slip rating. In contrast, for all en-suites within an aged care facility, the building must install flooring that has a R10 anti slip rating.
Porcelain tiles are available in a range of anti slip surfaces ranging from R9-R12. These tiles can be in either a matt, lapatto, honed or external finish to meet the anti slip reistances required for aged care facilities. There are a wide range of sizes, colours and styles available in these anti slip surfaces so the choices are limitless. This makes porcelain tile one of the most versatile flooring solutions to assist in improving safety at home or in aged care facilities.
The lineal indent or grooves in the step tread assist the visually impaired with identifying the edge of a surface where there may be a fall and also increase the slip resistance of the surface.
Step treads also generally have a rounded edge / bullnosed profile. This means the one of the elongated sides of the step tread will be round and smooth to the touch. This makes it the perfect edging for a stair or edge.

Some general information regarding aluminium tile trims that may prove useful.
When selecting your trim size, always make allowance for the thickness of your Tile Adhesive between the floor and tile. Example: - 8mm Tile used with 2mm Adhesive would require a 10mm trim. you should aim for the top of the tile trim to sit flush / even with the surface of the tile.
Most finishing trims have a clear plastic foil over them to protect the finish from damage. These trims have the following warning on them...
“Warning: WITH PROTECTIVE FOIL, Remove after grouting”
On all trims the following warning is also given...
“Warning: Ensure all excess grout and adhesive is removed with a sponge and warm water immediately”
Ensure that all grout and adhesives are removed and cleaned before removing the foil. This will give you a better finish and reduce the chance of damage to the trim.

Swedish study finds that living in a house with vinyl floors increases levels of phthalates in pregnant women
If you have or are considering vinyl flooring then this information is important to consider.
Nerang Tiles has a range of vinyl, ceramic and porcelain tiles on display at its Gold Coast tile showroom. It is important to have as much information as possible so you can make an informed choice on the most suitable flooring for your application.
It was previously reported that phthalates were linked to miscarriages. Evidence has now arisen that this harmful substance is linked to vinyl flooring as well.
Almost all types of vinyl flooring are functionally a great flooring choice. However their soft and gentle touch is most commonly due to the introduction of the substance phthalate. Phthalates are suspected to be endocrine disruptors and, according to some studies, related to the rate of miscarriages. Another study related phthalates to lower IQ levels (see here, here or here).
A new study from Sweden has established that PVC flooring in residential and commercial spaces is linked to higher intake and levels of phthalates in people's urine (see here).
The study reminds us that when manufacturing vinyl flooring, phthalates are not chemically bound to the product but mixed in. This means that it has the potential to migrate from the vinyl into the surround environment, such as your body.
The extensive use of PVC flooring (vinyl) throughout the world, particularly in colder climates, raises the question as to what degree such materials contribute to human uptake of phthalates. The aim of the present study is to investigate whether residential PVC flooring is related to the urinary levels of phthalate metabolites in pregnant women in the Swedish Environmental Longitudinal, Mother and child, Asthma and allergy (SELMA) study.
The study concluded:
This study has found significantly higher urinary levels of the BBzP metabolite (MBzP) in pregnant women living in homes with PVC flooring as compared to other flooring materials. Since BBzP is a regulated phthalate, our findings may bring the awareness of the usage of BBzP.
It should be noted that many manufacturers of what is now called Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) claim that they are phthalate-free. That is why they are tiles instead of sheet goods; they do not need as much plasticizer to soften it up. However they are still made up of PVC and are not eco friendly. Although significantly reducing the amount of phthalate in the product is a giant leap in the right direction for the industry and towards meeting the demands of the market, for safe, healthy and practical flooring solutions.
But we have one study that says phthalates cause miscarriages and another that says vinyl floors increase the amount of phthalates in pregnant women. This raises some concerns and is an important factor to consider when choosing a flooring application.
Nerang Tiles has a range of Luxury Vinyl Tile with reduced phthalate as well as a massive range of eco safe ceramic and porcelain tiles to choose from. It is important to have as much information about each product in our showroom before making a choice for your flooring. Ask our expert design team for more information regarding flooring solutions and which product best suits your application and style of living.
Almost every floor rated tile can be used as a wall tile. Just keep in mind the size and weight of the tile in question.
However please note that almost every wall tile is not suitable for a floor application. This is because many wall specific tiles are made with delicate surfaces and may scratch easily if placed on the floor. They are also commonly made of weaker materials because they do not intend for foot traffic to be applied and may crack or break if placed on the floor.
What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic tiles?
In short, how and what they are made of results in the difference between porcelain and ceramic tiles.
Porcelain Tiles – Are made via a dust pressed method which uses a composition of synthetic materials. Porcelain tiles are fired at extremely high temperatures which provide the body of a porcelain tile with a superior dense and impervious fine grained tile.
Ceramic Tiles – Are composed of organic clay based materials fired at lower temperatures than porcelain tile.
But wait there is more. Porcelain tile also comes as a glazed porcelain tile. This type of tile combines the benefits of both the durability of porcelain and the low maintenance, colour range and lower production cost of ceramic tiles. Glazed porcelain tile provides an additional protection to tile by sealing the surface with a micron thick layer of glass.
